While I go into each piece with an idea, how I execute it has an instinctive quality by allowing my materials to flow naturally. Using delicate yet rigid metal forms to create a framework that contrasts the smooth and transparent nature of clear glass creates a visual dichotomy that further allows movement to exist.

There is also something very pure about using clear glass in a world filled with color. Reflections are captured in a such a way that also brings the movement of the world changing around us, magnifying little details we tend to overlook.

Her hand-built and slab-built ceramic structures reflect homes, agricultural buildings, and simplified bird forms. She works with both earthenware and stoneware.

Earthenware works well with broad strokes of sheer bright glaze when I highlight surface textures and incised designs.

Stoneware is used when opaque and muted colors are desired to highlight shape. The narrative is central to all her work; communicating stories through images etched into the buildings or through the interaction of birds with each other and with their surroundings.

Stories often emerge from the marks created by the clay texturing process, which is loose and spontaneous. Groupings of multiple buildings create even more stories.

Groups of birds lend themselves to a tongue in cheek approach to the narrative through the ways their imagined interactions mimic human idiosyncrasies.

I was born in Hollywood a long time ago. I remember jacaranda trees and wild parrots; the thick smell of eucalyptus and jasmine; torrential rains and choking smog; palms and carob trees crammed with songbirds.

Jill Kyong grew up in northern Minnesota where she watched her dad build furniture. She took all the wood shop classes she could in high school, even though her teacher questioned, as a girl, if she really wanted to be there.

Jill received her BFA degree from the University of Minnesota in sculpture, focusing on metal casting. Since then, she has been distracted by living in various places and by family.

She has two grown kids, and it was their recent departure from home that prompted Jill to pursue making art again.

Dimitriy Gritsenko was born in Seattle and grew up in Everett. It was in San Francisco that he developed his interest in the medium of oil and painting on canvas and linen.

Seattle now provides a great backdrop for his newest works. Working with a variety of tools to apply the paint, Dimitriy paints with passion, energy and confidence easily visible in his work and all the while finding the gritty life of the city as the perfect subject.

A local Seattle favorite subject is Pike Place Market with its often wet and reflective pavement, neon lights burning through the mist and bustling shoppers hustling to avoid the rain that embraces the Seattle lifestyle and upbeat culture.

I love producing paintings that are immediately recognizable, exhibiting dynamic compositions, unusual subjects and vibrant colours.

Acrylic is a great medium for rapid and intuitive brushwork that retains a certain freshness and spontaneity. Commonly, this translates into work illustrating those quirky aspects of American life that generally pass unnoticed.

Jeff Wilson is an visual artist who works in acrylic. He was born in Edinburgh Scotland, and moved to the Pacific Northwest in He is a self-taught artist, who transitioned from a career in the resource industry in Steffanie Lorig spent her childhood drawing, doodling, and painting on any surface available.

She earned her Visual Communications degree and began her career as a graphic designer and illustrator. During that time, she founded a social enterprise that harnessed the healing power of creativity to help kids facing adversity.

Her work can be seen on a 4-story building in Bethesda, at a winery in Napa Valley, and in homes across the U.

In addition to being a prolific painter, she is the author of eleven books. This allows curiosity—rather than judgment—to lead the way, freeing me from perfectionistic tendencies.

The speed and precision of the table saw, the tool I use the most, supports my style of working which is fast and somewhat aggressive.

I try to capture the energy of an idea before it fades. My desire is to create art and functional furniture pieces that engage sometimes with concept, sometimes with form, sometimes both, but are always aesthetically pleasing and with successful proportions.

The intent of my work is to show the duality of an object or event, to deal with subject matter that considers different perspectives being equally strong and equally weak, equally good and equally bad.

Accepting that all things have a strength and a weakness, I can realize the empathy that is needed for me to understand that which I find difficult.

If there is friendship, there is loneliness. If there are bad choices, there are good ones. If there is love, there is hate.

I create works with very strong lines, sharp edges and angles and contrast that with the organic round shapes of wood rocks that I make or soft materials like shearling.

I use personal experiences of my own, and others who share their stories with me, to show there is always more than one side to a situation.

Jill Kyong grew up in northern Minnesota where she watched her dad build furniture. She took all the wood shop classes she could in high school, even though her teacher questioned, as a girl, if she really wanted to be there.

Jill received her BFA degree from the University of Minnesota in sculpture, focusing on metal casting. Since then, she has been distracted by living in various places and by family.

She has two grown kids, and it was their recent departure from home that prompted Jill to pursue making art again. Her themes have ranged from a raunchy party in a 17th century palace kitchen, a chinoiserie bestiary and most recently, an East Indian fantasy mural.

Ericka Wolf is an artist currently working in oil and resin. She studied oil and encaustic painting at Gage Academy of Art. She has participated in group and solo shows and her work is held in private and commercial collections in the Northwest, New York, Australia, and the UK.

She was born in and currently lives in Seattle with her husband and son. Color is elemental, primal, pure and can mean something different to each of us; it can be meditative or activating, transcendent or gently compassionate.

Something reductive but reflective, using color as a luminous expression rather than illustration. My goal is to invite the viewer to enter the painting, slow down, unclench and to access the soft, blurry consciousness of waking up, the luminescent light of the horizon before the sun sets or any time when your mind is quiet and you are open to what surfaces from that stillness.

When the state of the world itself seems bleak, I find a quiet slowness by contemplating the sky and the broad juxtaposing of color that can exist in myriad ways.

Terry is a Seattle native who studied photography in the s and subsequently refined her visual and conceptual style through studio classes.

In , she received her doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Washington. Today, Dr. I have always lived near a body of water. In Southern Oregon, my childhood was spent swimming, floating, and fishing on a river.

This was the beginning of my love of water. My encaustics are interpretations of the water I see around me and the places I travel.

The lines began by observing how nature and the urban environment overlap. They have evolved to suggest perspective and depth in the paintings.

Evoking these feelings is my intent. While I am able to influence the outcome, I am never able to completely control it. Every piece is entirely unique.

By a ravenous practice of observation, looking at a lot of art, and abstaining from taking any painting workshops, she has been able to develop her own unique style that is not quite categorizable.

People have described Brooke's paintings as the modern take on pointillism, comparable to cubism and Cezanne, or a hand made version of blown-up computer pixels.

She is nationally and internationally collected and shows at galleries in 5 different states- Washington, California, Oregon, Utah, and Maine.

Sports enthusiasts will remember her iconic photograph of Ken Griffey Jr. After an award-winning career at five newspapers, including staff positions with the Virginian-Pilot and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Robin embarked on a freelance career that has taken her on assignments around the world.

Along the way, she has photographed everyone from prom queens to actual kings, street people to presidents; personalities from Jennifer Aniston to Oprah Winfrey.

Robin now creates commissioned artwork for commercial and residential spaces. She has also expanded the boundaries of traditional photography in many ways; combining her images with vintage found objects to create critically acclaimed and highly sought art pieces, video walls and video art combined with found objects, wall coverings and recently has collaborated with Driscoll Robins to create high-end custom made rugs, inspired from her abstract images.

What pictures do best is capture a moment in time. She compels you to take a second look, a new view of the world around us.

I have been drawing, painting and making things since I was a child. My earliest, happiest memories involve looking at or making art.

I love being an artist. Since moving back to Seattle from Alaska in , acrylic and water-media painting combined with pen and ink drawing have been my tools of choice.

Although I usually have some underlying theme or concept in mind, the paintings are not preconceived but flow from my imagination as I work.

I begin each new piece by throwing down a chaos of random lines and color. The fun then lies in bringing order to the marks, solving the compositional puzzle through subtracting and adding, push and pull.

The decisions I make about composition and color arise as much from the paint as from me. Sometimes I lead and sometimes the paint does. I know a painting is complete and finished when I feel there is balance and that a visual punch line or story has been revealed.

Ultimately, my work celebrates the spirit of human imagination in paintings that bring a smile; vivid with color, rich in detail.

I paint to call attention to magic and mystery of all kinds in this world where joy is so often in short supply.

Gibson sees individual emotions in his mind as rooms of distorted space and color. Working in series, he expresses the confusing and conflicting emotions from his sometimes extraordinary, and often mundane, life experiences.

He achieves surprising depth and texture painting with resin or the ancient encaustic technique. He layers on pigmented wax or resin, gouging, scraping, torching, grinding, embedding and burnishing.

This physical process helps to create works that more accurately represent the emotions that he sees in his mind. Illustrator, jungle doctor, tech vice president, waiter, and janitor are some of the jobs that Gibson has held, and all along his path, he has been a working artist.

He now dedicates his full time to art. Gibson is an experimenter and voracious reader on art, philosophy, and physics.

The influence of his technical knowledge can be seen in the structure of his works and process. His emotional sensitivity comes naturally by being raised by hippie psychotherapists.

I create because I am still living, searching, confused, and normal. Architectural inspiration is constantly at work within me when I paint.

The early phases of the painting are very thought intensive. Much detailed planning is involved, based on an initial vision of elements and the manner in which they will work together harmoniously in the final stages of the piece.

In other words, which metal form will best harmonize the painting. The painting is impossible to paint without these forms already in place as the one cannot live without the other.

I am particularly interested in creating very soft yet saturated fields of color in contrast to the bold metal elements. I put in much effort to achieve a particular richness and depth in the application of the multitude of transparent tinted glazes, which comprise the field of the piece.

For me, painting in the abstract, is simply the expression of another, perhaps less familiar language. These intangible thoughts and inspirations are all about color, form, and harmony that exist within our everyday lives and surroundings.

As a child, her sense of identity was both fluid and fragile as she was not tied to certain people or places, with little understanding of her own ancestral background.

Her exposure to different cultures both inside and outside of the home gave her a great sense of wonder and appreciation for the visual languages and traditions that presented themselves around her.

My work can be described in many different categories but I would simply define it as contemporary portraiture. This series of 3d painting was adapted after seeing an old truck that someone had painted to blend in with the wall behind it in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle.

I like to incorporate these objects into my work to represent the obstacles we have to overcome in life. I like my work to create speculation and not just visual appeal.
